What Type of Environmentally Friendly Labels Are Available on the Market?

People, in general, are increasingly aware of their carbon footprint and businesses are quickly making the decision to go green. As the demand for environmentally friendly labels increase, the question is raised, “What options exist when it comes to environmentally-conscious labelling?”.

CleanFlake™ Labels, Using the Highly Recyclable PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a plastic resin generally used in bottles and food containers. It can be endlessly recycled to create new packaging.

CleanFlake™ creates their labels in a way that preserves the recyclability of PET materials. For example, standard labels can greatly reduce the value of PET by contaminating the material with adhesive or parts of the label. When labels cannot be completely removed from the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) during the recycling process, it loses its ability to be recycled on end. Unlike standard labels, CleanFlake™ labels completely detach from the PET during the recycling process, leaving zero trace of adhesives.

Brown Paper Labels, The Green Choice

Opting for brown paper backing in labelling is an environmentally friendly option for any company. These labels are created without the use of chlorine, while maintaining the high quality your clients rely on. Brown paper labels are a fantastic way to greatly reduce the use of harmful elements during the production process.

Furthermore, using 1000 tons of brown paper saves 6089 trees and reduces the same amount of CO2 produced by 1969 cars in a single year. Choosing this method of labelling also saves the same amount of electricity 139 homes generate yearly and saves 300 000 gallons of water, think 15 swimming pools.

Linerless Labels, Reducing Paper Waste

Linerless labels are another excellent option for going green. Forgoing the liners in labelling allows for zero paper waste. These labels are created on rolls and each label is cut to exact measurements at the same time of printing. This process results in 50% less waste than traditional labelling methods. Linerless labels deliver more labels per roll. End result – you save on stocking and transport, while saving the environment, for the win.

Biodegradable and Compostable Labels

Biodegradable and compostable labels are in increasing demand, especially in cosmetic and food industries.

Using FSC® certified wood pulp, these labels are made from responsibly sourced wood fibers, supporting forest-friendly manufacturing. The adhesive is certified “OK Compost”, meaning it is both biodegradable and therefor compostable. The face of the labels is equally biodegradable.

Biodegradable and compostable labels are fully approved for direct contact with dry and non-fatty foods. Indirect contact is approved for using these labels with all other types of food. It goes without saying that these types of labels must also be used for all biodegradable and compostable packaging, notably water bottles made from PLA (degradable polylactic acid).
