To make your wine bottles stand out and attract customers, you need the right printing manufacturer to work with. Making wine is an art, but so is marketing this delicious beverage. Custom beverage labels play a key role in this process. Here are a few tips to help you get the best custom wine bottle labels possible and bring your business to new heights.

How Do Wine Label Designs Impact Wine Sales?

While the label doesn’t make or break the actual wine, it positively influences whether someone chooses to buy it. After all, the label will create the customers’ first impression of the wine.

However, there are no cookie-cutter solutions for wine bottle label design, as different people are drawn to different labels.

A true connoisseur will stick to classic labels with clean lines adorned with a touch of gold or metallic finish. On the other hand, someone younger or new to wine might be more compelled to choose a label that is modern, artistic or humorous.

The design should fit the wine itself. A sweet, summery, white wine of a lower price won’t have the same style as a classic, earthy, expensive red wine. In the end, you want your product to get noticed, but the game is different than for beer or other beverages. Wine bottle labels that are too extravagant might give an impression of immaturity and lower quality.

Apart from the design, some information is required on wine labels in Canada, such as the common name, the % of alcohol per volume, the net amount of product, the country of origin if imported, the name and address of the importer, and any additional claims. If your wine is a blend of your own production and imported wine, that must be clearly stated. Each province has specific rules when it comes to labelling and selling alcoholic beverages, so it’s essential to review any local jurisdiction.

If you are starting out in the industry, you could begin with something more classic that will appeal to your target market. You can get more creative as long as it showcases your identity.

Why Aren't Sulphite Levels Listed on Wine Bottle Labels?

To understand why sulphite levels aren’t listed on wine labels in Canada, you need to understand what sulphites are and how they work.

Sulphites are often added to wines to extend their shelf life and improve the appearance and taste. They stop the fermentation and oxidization process, making the wine more stable and helping preserve its colour.

It’s important to understand that virtually all wine contains some sulphites, as they naturally occur during the fermenting process. This is especially true for red wine. However, the quantity of sulphite in organic wine or wine marked as “without sulphites” will be minimal. Below 10 particles per million (ppm), declaring the presence of sulphites is not required.

Most people can consume added sulphite, but some may experience allergic or undesirable reactions such as skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems. This is why it is important to state the presence of added sulphites.

However, the sulphite level isn’t listed on wine labels because, even though winemakers add it in precise amounts, the actual content can vary slightly from bottle to bottle.

How Much Does It Cost To Make a Wine Label?

The cost to make a wine label from A to Z varies due to several factors.

The cost of the design will vary depending on the person creating it. Great designers with proven experience aren’t cheap. If you can have the design done in-house, you’ll save a fair amount of money, but the quality might not be as good.

The material, shape and coating of the labels will also impact the cost. Generally speaking, higher quality is more expensive, but there can be some nuances, so be sure to ask professionals to help you find the right type of labels for wine bottles.

Of course, the quantity will have some impact on the cost. The more labels you need, the higher the bill will be. However, you’ll generally get a better price per label with a larger overall quantity.

Whether you choose digital printing or another technique, such as flexography, this will also influence the price.

If you already have your design, you don’t need the best quality label, are printing it on equipment you already have, it can be pretty affordable.

If you want a professional label created by an experienced graphic designer and are printing a very large number of labels of the best quality possible, the costs will be substantial.
