Phenol-free (PBA-PBS) and PFAS/PFOAS-free sections

The composition of phenols (PBA-PBS) and PFAS/PFOAS (so-called “forever chemicals”), their health impacts, and the importance of eliminating them in compliance with legislation.

The use of phenol-free and PFAS-free (per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances) materials in a flexographic and digital printing plant is essential to protect human health and the environment.

Here is the corresponding molecular structure for each:

1-Example of Phenolic compound:

2-Example of PFAS/PFOS compound:

Here are some of the advantages and strategies we use:

  1. Health and safety: Phenols and PFASs are known to have adverse health effects, including cancer risks and hormone disruption. Using materials without these substances reduces the risks for workers and consumers.
  2. Environmental impact: PFAS are persistent pollutants that can contaminate water and soil. Eliminating them helps protect ecosystems and reduce pollution.
  3. Regulatory compliance: Many regions impose restrictions and penalties on the use of phenols and PFASs. Adopting materials free of these substances enables you to comply with regulations and avoid penalties.
  4. Innovation and competitiveness: Using phenol- and PFAS-free alternatives boosts our innovation and improves our competitiveness as a North American company, by meeting the growing demand for safer, more durable products.

By integrating these materials into production processes, a flexographic or digital printing plant can not only improve its environmental performance but also meet the expectations of consumers and regulators. It’s also worth noting that PFAS-free is a law in Canada, and phenol-free has been in force since early 2025 in Canada and will follow suit elsewhere. We are actively complying.
